Simran Singh is an illustrator, artist, and author presently based in Toronto, Canada. At the moment she is currently studying Illustration and Textiles at the Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCAD U). She will graduate in 2022 with a Bachelor of Design. 

Some of the themes that Simran is presently exploring in her work are based around her own identity and cultural background. Like many born in the West from immigrant parents, she feels a disconnect between herself and her heritage. She identifies as Punjabi, she identifies as a Sikh, but she does not always feel that way. 

One of the biggest turning points for Simran in her self-reflecting was coming to the realization that she should not feel shame for feeling disconnected in a place that disconnects itself from the rest of the world. There was a real lack of representation in every outlet that Simran was exposed to growing up, and so it was with that epiphany that Simran decided her art career in whichever way it goes will be dedicated to creating work that is advocating for the ethnic minorities, educating the undereducated, and over representing the marginalized. 

Simran wants to leave a mark on this world, and she’s found that the best way she can do that is through her art. It is what she is passionate about, and your passion shows in everything you do. Now whenever Simran takes on a project, she will deconstruct the brief and see in which ways she can tie it back to her own heritage or use this brief to bring her heritage to a new outlet. 

One of Simran’s favourite ways of doing this is by using art styles and patterns inspired by historical Indian art and bringing them into Western context while keeping true to her own individual style. She is currently using bright and vibrant colour palettes to push her work further and give them life.
