“Grandma’s Cabinet of Curiosities”

2020 // Procreate

How can one combine a broken antique doll, a blue Da Vinci flying machine, and a broken sewing machine into one illustration? Well for Simran, the solution was to add more random junk to the mix because how else can you decide what doesn’t belong? When Simran was brainstorming this illustration, one thing she realized was that everyone has a cabinet at home filled with an assortment of trinkets or long broken objects that just keep on collecting, the elderly more than anyone else. What’s more interesting is that we look at these objects and we think “wow, I wonder what story that has” when in reality we should be thinking about the story of the person who owns that object. It came into their possession in some way, but how? And why? And when? And from who? Everyone, including your grandparents have lived a life, but we tend to forget that.
